What’s Causing Your Clogged Drains?

What’s Causing Your Clogged Drains?

Your home has a system for managing your waste water that either includes a main water line served by the city or a septic system if you live in an area not covered by city water services.

Your wastewater will go down into a septic tank installed at specific distances from your home and from any fresh water coming into the home.

Lift stations are pumping stations in sewage collection systems, which in residential situations is the septic system. They are normally designed to route raw sewage from underground gravity pipelines. Sewage is fed into your septic tank in The Colony.

When the sewage level rises in the tank to a certain level, the lift station pump wastewater from a lower to a higher elevation . Normally gravity would help the flow of the wastewater, but when the system has to go from lower ground to higher ground, it needs to be pumped.

If the pump needs repair or the lateral lines on your septic system aren’t situated correctly, you could have problems with drains that won’t flow correctly. Your issue may not be that there’s a clog, but that the flow out to disburse the sewage water is not occurring correctly.

Another issue could be with the septic tank holding the sewage water instead of releasing it. When the sewage wastewater isn’t broken down properly, the tank will slowly fill with the sledge and little of it will be disbursed through the ground as it should be.

Tree roots are a major cause of clogged drains in The Colony. Certain trees develop root systems that grow at the same depth as your pipes. The roots will overtake the pipes and often will grow through them or in between sections.

Another problem could be septic tank failure. Septic tank failure happens when the bacteria and enzymes that destroy waste are inadvertently killed off by household cleaning chemicals or strong medications taken by the owners. The tank is no longer able to rid itself of wastewater.

Also, a number of parts can break down causing failure. The most common parts needing repair or replacement are the septic pumps, filters, and tank aerators.

When these break down, the sludge is not allowed to escape from the tank and it ends up overloading the drainfield with solids. This causes the biological materials to be out of balance where they will build up instead of flowing out into the ground through the system’s lateral lines..

Symptoms your septic tank has issues:

  • Odors near and above the septic area
  • Slow flushing drains or toilets
  • Wet areas above the septic tank or drainfield
  • Plumbing backups
  • Pump or high-level Alarms engaging

When you experience drainage problems with your septic system, you sometimes suffer with a mess to clean up along with foul odors if the system backs up into your home. The methane released from a sewage system can be dangerous, so be sure you aren’t breathing it in. If you have an emergency, be sure to call us.
